The City selected Dollar General as a potential fit to benefit the community of Marion so the City researched the company’s needs, wants, current and past projects and then reached out to the Dollar General Corporate offices. After two months of negotiations with a real estate developer, a deal was reached between the developer and the City of Marion to purchase land. Ground was broken on August 3rd 2015, and the store opened December 13, 2015.
A Dollar General store typically brings in $1.6 million dollars a year in taxable sales. Adding this sales tax will raise the total sales tax collected in the city about 12% over 2014. This combined with the addition of new jobs and highly visible development made this an easy decision to pursue for our town.
